LCL vs FCL Betel Nut Shipments: Which Option Is Better for Importers?

When importing betel nut from Indonesia, buyers often ask whether they should choose LCL (Less than Container Load) or FCL (Full Container Load) shipping.
The answer depends on the order quantity, budget, and business needs.
At PT Rezeki Mandiri Global, we have experience handling both shipment methods. While most export orders are shipped using full containers, we also support LCL shipments for buyers who need smaller quantities.
This article explains the differences between LCL and FCL shipping and helps importers choose the most suitable option.

What Is LCL Shipping?

LCL (Less than Container Load) means your cargo does not occupy an entire container.
Instead, your shipment is consolidated with cargo from other exporters inside the same container.
This option is commonly used by:
  • New importers
  • Trial buyers
  • Small distributors
  • Buyers who need less than one container
Currently, our minimum order quantity (MOQ) for LCL shipments is 3 metric tons.
For example, in January 2026 we exported approximately 3 tons of Split Betel Nut Grade 90–95% to Jebel Ali Port, UAE using an LCL shipment.

How LCL Shipments Work from Jambi

Unlike major export cities such as Jakarta, At present, LCL cargo is generally consolidated through Jakarta consolidation warehouses before export.
For this reason, cargo must first be transported from our warehouse in Jambi to a consolidation warehouse in Jakarta.
The typical process is:
Warehouse in Jambi → Truck Transportation → Jakarta Consolidation Warehouse → Singapore (or other transit hub) → Destination Port

For shipments to Maldives, our cargo usually travels:
Jambi → Jakarta → Singapore → Malé

In some cases, transit may occur through Port Klang, Malaysia depending on the shipping line and forwarder arrangement.
To avoid missing vessel schedules, cargo is normally dispatched from Jambi early in the week so it can arrive at the Jakarta warehouse before Friday.

Advantages of LCL Shipping

LCL offers several advantages for importers:

Lower Initial Investment

Buyers do not need to purchase an entire container.
This allows businesses to test the market before placing larger orders.

Flexible Order Quantity

Importers can purchase quantities such as:
  • 3 tons
  • 5 tons
  • 10 tons
without waiting until they can fill a full container.

Suitable for Trial Orders

Many new buyers prefer to verify product quality, logistics, and local demand before committing to larger purchases.
For this reason, LCL is often used for first-time orders.

Disadvantages of LCL Shipping

Although LCL provides flexibility, it also has limitations.

Higher Freight Cost per Ton

Because container space is shared, shipping costs per ton are generally higher than FCL.

Longer Handling Process

Cargo may be unloaded, consolidated, and transferred multiple times during transit.

Increased Risk

Since different products from multiple exporters share the same container, buyers may face risks such as:
  • Odor contamination
  • Cargo damage caused by other goods
  • Additional handling during consolidation

What Is FCL Shipping?

FCL (Full Container Load) means one buyer uses the entire container.
This is the most common export method for large-volume betel nut shipments.
At Talang Duku Port, Jambi, exports are typically shipped using:
  • 20ft Dry Container
  • 40ft Dry Container
Betel nut exports use standard dry containers rather than refrigerated containers.
Typical loading capacity is:
  • 20ft Container: approximately 18 metric tons net
  • 40ft Container: approximately 27 metric tons net
Although a 40ft container may hold slightly more, we generally load around 27 tons to maintain proper cargo arrangement and handling.

Advantages of FCL Shipping

Lower Shipping Cost per Ton

Because the container is dedicated to one buyer, transportation costs are usually more economical.

Better Cargo Security

Products are not mixed with cargo from other exporters.
This reduces the risk of contamination and handling damage.

Faster Logistics Process

The container is sealed after loading and delivered directly to the destination without consolidation activities.

Which Option Should You Choose?

LCL is usually suitable if:
  • You are a new importer
  • You want to place a trial order
  • You need only a few tons
  • You are testing market demand
FCL is usually suitable if:
  • You already have an established distribution network
  • You require regular shipments
  • You want lower freight costs per ton
  • You need maximum cargo security
For many importers, the first shipment begins with LCL and later progresses to FCL once market demand becomes stable.
